How my holiday worked out is that I stayed in St. John's and drove around from Wednesday to the following Sunday, catching a plane from there to Deer Lake (as opposed to a 9 hour drive) on the Monday morning.

I'd hoped, as I was there at the weekend, I would get the chance to go sea kayaking - there's a well-known firm that has been doing trips for many years but sadly there was not enough interest expressed for them to go out on the days I was in town. This also puzzled the woman who I spoke with, who said people had rung up before demanding to go out when it was snowing and when there was perfect weather for kayaking, the phone didn't ring at all (except for me!).

Speaking of the weather, I have to say I think I was extremely lucky as I really only had two miserable days when it rained a lot. The rest of the time it was at least dry, with many quite warm and sunny days in there, which means very little photoshopping required of photos to make them look that way!

One of the places I went on the east side of the island was Brigus, home of Arctic explorer Captain Bob Bartlett:

Somewhere near there I saw this perfect example of why the dandelion should be the provincial flower:

And then, on the other side of the island, we're into Gros Morne National Park - lots of proper mountains (the Long Range Mountains, which were apparently once part of the Appalachians) and mixed conifer and birch forest:

A typical morning outside Rocky Harbour, where I stayed for the first couple of nights:

A moose! My first moose of the trip, calmly eating its breakfast about 20 yards off the road just outside the town of Rocky Harbour:

The beach at Cow Head, complete with lots of driftwood - the sea in question is the Strait of Belle Isle, which runs between the Gulf of St Laurence and Labrador, so cross here and you'd end up in Quebec:

All sorts of weird rock stuff going on around here:

Next stop, Western Brook Pond and heading north.

The weird rock stuff is ...ummm.. weird. Almost looks like the oil washing up on shore in the gulf.

Thanks for the pix. enjoying them.
