The reason most of us know him is from the series of movies (four so far, starting with Third Man Out (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0446051/)) based on the Donald Strachey books, about a gay PI and his husband. The movies are well worth checking out, mostly because of the relationship between Don and Tim (Sebastian Spence, also very cute).
