I try my best not to get sucked into stuff, and indeed my golden rule is usually that if I can't make it through the pilot episode then I'm pretty safe. However, there are a few shows that I'm borderline obsessive about and in relation to which that series of tubes known as the Interweb helps me sustain my habit.

These are the current ones:

ReGenesis - is it my imagination, or is David getting way less 'action' this season? Also, Bob angst! Eeee!
Boston Legal - Alan/Denny is love!
New Amsterdam - I think I am mesmerised by Nikolaj Whatsisname's oh-so-sharp-and-pointy nose, which helps me overlook the lack of chemistry between him and 'the one'
Eli Stone - I can't help myself, it's just so dumb and yet I am compelled
Dirt - I love Ian Hart. 'Nuff said.
30 Rock - never thought I'd like Alec Baldwin in something, but...

Stuff I'm desperately waiting for the new season (or, in the case of some channels, stupid second half-season) of:

Life - unexpectedly at the top of the list, after I got smitten last season
Psych - Shawn/Gus is love!
Burn Notice - even though I want to force-feed Gabrielle Anwar with the pies Bruce Campbell needs to stop eating
Blood Ties - shiny!
The Closer - another unexpected addition
Entourage - more shiny!
Dexter - no idea where a third season is going to go....
Heroes - hope they can pull it back together after the shambles they made of most of season 2

There's probably other stuff out there I'm obsessive over as well, but these are the main contenders at the moment... I'm still dling Numb3rs in the hope that one day I will summon up the enthusiasm to catch up with the 6 or so season 4 eps I'm behind on, but who knows when that might happen?

Lots of things on that list that I've never heard of, and that I'm guessing aren't showing in the UK as yet. Sadly Boston Legal lost me because Denny and Alan turned into bona fide assholes - that stopped me cold. Dirt had me for a while but I just didn't find it that interesting long-term. I'll look out for all kinds of the other stuff, see what Digiguide can come up with if I put them on alert.

Thanks for this!

Sadly, my list just has repeats and very few new programmes. I'm watching repeats of CSI, ReGenesis, and various house shows - building / decorating (it's on my mind at the moment!). I'm waiting for good stuff, but I doubt it'll come for quite a while.

Some of those are showing on UK channels, or are at least available on dvd over here so you can rent the first season and see how you get on: including, but not restricted to, Psych, 30 Rock, Blood Ties and Entourage.

I developed such an antipathy towards Sara on the original CSI that I can't bear to watch the show any more, though I'd previously seen about 6 seasons' worth and I actively avoid the other variants of it. Some weeks I have definitely watched more stuff that has come through the tubes than on my own tv. :(

And s1 of The Closer is out on dvd here as well. Somehow that one fell off the list.

I'm absolutely with you on Sara. She's so whiny all the time, and the crush on Grissom was just too much. The first time I watched CSI I think I saw 4 seasons then gave up. We're at S4 on the Living repeat showing at the moment, and I'm beginning to remember why I gave up - too much formula again. I did watch the two eps at the end of S5 with Nick buried alive, but otherwise I'll be getting all new eps now. I'm hoping I'll just be able to ignore Sara - maybe fast forward through her scenes and solve that problem fairly easily.

Psych - totally agree with you there. I love that show!
Burn Notice - feel the same way. Some one needs to do the redistrubition of the food for these two actors. Another question: does Anwar's character pass now they haven't mentioned her IRA ties for an entire season?

Heroes - I'll only watch it now if the writers have stopped fucking around and actually get down to some *story* and dump the rotten writing for the women on the show.

As well as feeling the Shawn/Gus love (they are so married!), I'm particularly fond of their creative use of guest stars. Like the ep with Kevin Sorbo (who I usually can't stand) as the egomaniac bounty hunter, or Ernie Hudson and Phyllicia Rashad as Gus's parents. Genius!

Another question: does Anwar's character pass now they haven't mentioned her IRA ties for an entire season?

She's still way behind the other characters in terms of my liking her, regardless, but that's independent of that whole business.

He actually got shot down! Almost literally! *g* I'm enjoying the Bob angst, but I also have a tinge of disappointment too. I'd heard spoilery talk that Bob would have a love interest this season, but I had thought it would be at some point later after he'd returned to NorBAC. I figured it would be another scientist or lab tech, maybe someone he met at another lab while working on a case. The whole amnesia mystery woman thing is getting a bit old.

New Amsterdam - I think I am mesmerised by Nikolaj Whatsisname's oh-so-sharp-and-pointy nose, which helps me overlook the lack of chemistry between him and 'the one'

He is rather mesmerizing, isn't he? I'm starting to wonder if the total lack of chemistry is the point. You can't force someone to love you, especially if you're keeping secrets and doing it because you think it's "destiny" and it's what you're supposed to do, instead of something that comes naturally.

I wish Psych had longer seasons. The wait takes forever. Burn Notice should be coming back soon, and I hope Anwar ate something during the break. I never got to watch Blood Ties, but I heard good things, so I'm on the lookout for it to be out on DVD. I love The Closer, and what to be Brenda when (if?) I grow up. Dexter is one I have to follow via DVD, so I've got a wait on that one, though I did manage to see the first four episodes thanks to a Showtime freebie weekend.

Heroes... I hope it gets a sense of direction again. It was almost like they started over from a storytelling POV, trying to build up a story from scratch, instead of hitting the ground running as they should have. I will overlook it if they pull it together when it returns, and also because they gave me a lovely bit of slash fodder with the whole "Molly has Two Daddies" thing. It amuses me greatly, especially when it was first revealed that Matt had moved in with Mohinder and this buzz went through slashdom of, "What? Really?! Was anybody already slashing them? We've got to catch up with the other ships, and we've totally got something to lord over them now!" *g*

That would, however, require a degree of subtlety rarely seen in television writers... ;)

I never got to watch Blood Ties, but I heard good things, so I'm on the lookout for it to be out on DVD.

It's not the most intellectual of shows, but it's chock full of the pretty, not to mention one episode where the (pretty) vampire leading man is chained up and tortured and has half his clothes ripped off. What's not to love?

I will overlook it if they pull it together when it returns, and also because they gave me a lovely bit of slash fodder with the whole "Molly has Two Daddies" thing.

Well, the comments being made towards the end of the season seemed to indicate that the Heroes PTB were a) listening to what was being said about what wasn't working and also agreed with some of it themselves. Always a pleasant surprise after the Boys at Bridge and their ego trips.

I just started watching New Amsterdam, and I think I like it.

I also really liked Life and can't wait for new episodes. I'm less sure about Heroes, though.

Sometimes I think I should start watching Boston Legal again, but I've missed so many episodes. I guess it wouldn't really matter with this show.

I've only heard of a couple of the other shows, but have never seen them. 30 Rock sounds interesting, though. Oh, I think I just recently created a season pass (to record any and all episodes) for Burn Notice. It was on my Tivo Suggestions list. I have no clue what it's about or who Bruce Campbell is. *g* It's nice to see it's on your list, though. Maybe it will end up being something I like.

For some reason your "shiny" recs seem the most intriguing to me. *g*

I wasn't convinced initially where 30 Rock was concerned, after all haven't we had shows set in television stations before? But this one is quite acute at sporking various cultural trends as well, and Alec Baldwin was unexpectedly funny, in a very dry way.

I have no clue what it's about or who Bruce Campbell is. *g*

What fannish rock have you been living under to say such things about the Bruce? *falls over*

For some reason your "shiny" recs seem the most intriguing to me.

Sometimes all you need is some shininess and nothing more. In other words, shows packed full of cute guys that require little intellectual engagement. :)

I really have to watch Life, it sounds like the kind of thing I'd like a lot.

What's ReGenesis about?

Let's see what happens with Heroes, I guess they got a reprieve but this third season is the one that will turn it into a solid thing or will make it go down. I hope they give us solid stories.

ReGenesis is about rogue science, really, and I'm pretty sure you'd enjoy it. It's set in a fictional laboratory called NORBAC, which is a US-Canada-Mexico joint endeavour to deal with disease outbreaks and so on. There's also all sorts of government shenanigans going on in the background and meanwhile all the scientists are realistically geeky yet human and flawed. It's currently in season 4, so there's a load of eps to get into, not to mention that it's prime Canadian Actor Bingo material.
