Criminal Minds: Ever get the feeling someone really didn't want to be there? Fresh from his snit fit, Mandy Patinkin turns in something of a by-phone performance as they toy with (but never quite confirm) how they're writing his character out of the show. I'm reserving judgement on the whole Joe Mantegna thing, till I see how they bring him in and whether it works or not, but then Patinkin's character was always my least favourite of all of them...
BTW, who ever is dressing Shemar Moore? Why bother with even putting a shirt on him if it's going to be that tight? It just seems like a waste of good material for no reason. ;)
Life: You know, considering that I was looking forward to Journeyman more than I was to this, Life turned out to be the better of the two shows at first sight. Basically, the premise is that the main character is a detective (Charlie Crews) who was framed for murder and spent 12 years in a maximum security prison but was then exonerated and has rejoined the LAPD, with a large financial settlement that basically allows him to do as he likes the rest of the time. Damian Lewis is excellent, and it has Robin Weigert in a supporting role (you may recall her as Calamity Jane, in Deadwood) along with Crews' new partner, who is (of course) being punished for former infractions by being partnered with him. She is also, naturally, another one of the cookie cutter actors that Hollywood seems to be churning out now (see Journeyman for two more), as is Crews' lawyer.
Now if only the people who make this show can resist the urge to ship up Crews with his partner, I will be very happy, but what's the odds that'll happen prior to the show being canned? I give it 6 episodes, alas.
