graculus: (geek love)

I'm not a lawyer, nor do I play one on tv, but I do have a lovely job for local government that requires me to keep up with legislation and so it cheered my sad and geeky heart yesterday to discover the newly-opened Statute Law Database. Basically, for sad people like me who're interested in that sort of thing, it's an archive of primary and secondary legislation for the entire UK (as enacted by the English, Scottish, Northern Irish and Irish Parliaments/Assemblies of various periods).

Which basically means pretty much all the law you might ever need, dating back from 1267 to the present day - that means if you ever need to know about A Statute forbidding Bearing of Armour (1313), which bans people from coming armed to the Houses of Parliament, or indeed the Prevention of Damage by Rabbits Act 1939, this is the place to go! ;)

Awesome! I'm a Government Documents Librarian (as well as Reference) and I find that exciting. I am, however, a US librarian. Still, I bookmarked it. Cool beans!

The only downside is that it's not full text where stuff has been repealed, but if it's just been amended it's all there...

Hey, you never know when you might need a copy of the Magna Carta! Or at least what's left of it now it's been amended by subsequent law... ;)

You are awesome!

I was just wondering about researching British law, since something came up in a story I'm writing in, you know, that fandom you hate that I reckoned I should look up the law for. I was just going to hit the law library at work and start randomly hitting criminal cases in the All England Law Reports to see what I found, but this'll be so much easier. And cooler.

BTW, we're nearing the end of ReGenesis season one, and I finally understand the Bob/David thing. Noooo!

There's probably one of those in there too, but I think it would have been a bit earlier on... ;)

The only downside of the thing is that it doesn't cite the entire text if that part of that law has been repealed, but at least it'll give you an idea of where things are at. Having spent many hours up to my eyebrows in the various Law Reports, I wouldn't wish that on anyone! ;)

I think Bob is my favourite character, and he just gets even better in season 2...

You say that like it's a bad thing! ;)

Back when I was a legal researcher, I spent more than enough time with my nose in law reports as well. Which is why I was putting off said research. I poked around the site and found thaty, yeah, what I need (Criminal Evidence Act around 1969) was repealed, but I think I can find what I need now on our databases at work.

I do like Bob, but I'm becoming more and more fond of Carlos. And of course I can't resist David Sandstrom's angst puppy ways.

Part of my job is also keeping up with relevant caselaw and, being sad and geeky, I get unduly excited when something crops up. And then they all look at me funny. ;)

The thing about David is that he's such a big tart and it's always fascinating to see what kind of major trainwreck he can cause...

Clearly I need a Canadian scientist icon...

Yep, David is a total tart and prone to causing messy, interesting trainwrecks. Not to mention the worst dad ever. (We miss Lilith.) All of which is irresistible in a fictional setting.

A good part of my affection for the show is that everybody in the lab reminds me, in different ways, of my crazy astrophysicist pals, in that they are profane, promiscuous, cooking-loving, funky and obsessive in ways that you don't generally see in portrayal of scientists in the mainstream media.
