graculus: (oh please)

If you ever needed proof there is no pleasing me, I have to say that this morning's meeting would provide it - as I suspected, I may well be asked to cover the post I'm currently in for another week, two at the maximum, and then they've got someone lined up for 6 months anyway. I was surprised to find myself mildly miffed at this, even though it's giving me the chance to escape from working way too hard for a living. I was getting suspicious, though, when the other night I was finally given a key to the office and inducted into the arcane mysteries of the alarm system... ;)

In other news, someone went off from work with shingles, so I'm keeping my fingers and toes crossed that I won't follow suit, though I understand it's not contagious?

Am much in love with I, Claudius, though it amuses me that Derek Jacobi has aged much better in real life than the amount of aging make-up they slapped on him back then to make him head towards the age he really is now...

Oh, I *loved* I, Claudius, when it first aired on PBS so many years ago in the 1970s. It was fantastic. I have thought about renting the series: I'm almost afraid to watch it again, fearing it won't hold up to how I remember it.

I was too young to appreciate it first time around (since it aired in 1976) and I guess I must have seen it some other time the BBC repeated it, but I don't remember when. However, I've been a big fan of the books for years and while it does look a little dated - no exteriors, for example, which must have helped the budget immensely - the quality of the performances more than makes up for it.

Shingles aren't contagious. It's a reactivation of the chicken pox virus, which spreads along the nerves and causes intense pain.

Someone who's never had chicken pox before (or had the vaccine) can get it by being around someone with active blisters caused by shingles, since it's the same virus.

I knew it was something like that. I've had chickenpox, so I ought to be safe, though... well, at least from catching it, if not from getting it at some point in the future. ;)

Being very run down can cause the reactivation. My mum never had chickenpox but was exposed to it when my sister and I had it many, many years ago then after her father died mum developed shingles.

I ♥ I, Claudius, too.

I dunno, the alarm code makes me think that the new person is just a myth...

Your mum probably had a very mild case at some point in her life and might not remember it or realize what it was at the time. It happens sometimes, but it's often not enough to build a future immunity to getting the pox -- my cousin had a mild case with only one or two pox that we probably wouldn't have realized he had if everyone else in the family wasn't down with it at the time and he got a full case of it two years later -- but can still be enough to reactivate later on in life.

I adore I Claudius as well. I watched it first time round in the 70s and loved it then, but I saw it in B&W, so it's great to see the colour version. I agree about Derek Jacobi, but I think the make-up people did a pretty good job of ageing him, and after all he went through, it's no wonder Claudius looks a bit knackered! Sian Philips is a wonderfully evil Livia, isn't she?
