30 Days - day 14
Jul. 14th, 2011 08:49 pm14 – Ratings – how high are you comfortable with going? Have you ever written higher? If you're comfortable with NC-17, have you ever been shocked by finding that the story you're writing is G-rated instead?
First off, let me say that I've never quite understood how the US movie-style ratings work anyway, so I dare say at times I've labelled stuff wrong.
However, for me the pr0n part of stories is meant to advance the plot and character development as much as the non-naked parts do and so if it works for the story, then I'll write whatever is needed - often it's the intimacy that a less overtly explicit scene promotes to the reader that works better anyway.
Still, I have no concerns about how explicit it needs to be, if it fits what I'm trying to do, but I won't write smut just out of some idea that for so many words written there's a sex scene needed.
