Aug. 13th, 2006 03:12 pmSo, voting's now open on this year's Stargate Fan Awards - for anyone who doesn't know the fandom, I have to say this set of awards has had its fair share of controversy over the past couple of years and seems to reinvent itself every year (though whether that's as a result of the controversy or just coincidental, I couldn't say). This year, for example, you have to log in for the purpose of voting, so you can probably guess what one of the past controversies was about... ;)
I was pleased, if somewhat surprised, to discover I'd had two stories nominated. Because I'd come to the conclusion that the kind of fic I write clearly doesn't do much for the people who rec Stargate SG-1 fic, for some reason or other. Not because my fic is significantly worse (in my opinion) than the fic the 'cool kids' write, but just because it's not theirs. *shrugs* Clearly at least two people out there like me, since one of my stories was nominated twice and I didn't nominate myself! :P
However, I have to say that of all the many changes over the lifespan of these awards, the one that's surprised me the most is the decision this year to lump all pairings in together for both ship and slash fic**. Because how can it possibly be fair for those people who don't write the most popular pairings (and we all know what those are)? I have little expectation of winning anyway, but at least the two stories I have nominated are Jack/Daniel and therefore automatically more likely to a) be read, and b) get votes than stories about other pairings, no matter how well written.
In addition, there's a couple of people participating this year who'd boycotted previous awards, which surprised me. However, I'm sure they have their reasons, which are doubtless all good and honest.
** Except not, because apparently this only happens consistently in the SG-1 slash section - other sections get to differentiate on some occasions, thus levelling the playing field a little more...
