Sep. 3rd, 2004 08:55 amYou know, I'm always amused by people posting stuff in their lj with the apparently-obligatory 'look! I'm being contentious!' tag to their opinion (well-stated or pulled out of their arse, it doesn't really matter). It smacks so much of Look At Me, I Am *Such* A Rebel (Even If I Am Still Living At Home At Age 30)!!!!111!! ;)
Especially when most of the time their opinion isn't:
a) all that unique in the fandom
b) all that contentious anyway, because of a)
c) anything other than further evidence that they are part of the rich tapestry of nutjobs and oddballs that seem to comprise a significant proportion of fandom as we know it
One sure way to know if your opinion is contentious - if you feel you have to warn for it (why exactly would you do that anyway, other than the obvious flame-baiting potential?) then it probably isn't quite as radical as you think it is.
