You know, I've been wondering.. just why is it we end up writing in the fandoms we do?

I mean, I read voraciously, across a wide variety of fandoms, and there are shows where my mind just boggles at the creativity of the writers involved. How do they keep turning out fic that hits so many of my buttons (and not always in a slashy way)? But those aren't fandoms I seem to have any plot ideas in.

I have a lengthy list for SG, numbering well over 50 plot bunnies last time I looked. There are a couple of novellas in there, at least, as well as a few dozen other lengthy stories. Enough SG fic to see me comfortably into the next decade, at the rate which I normally write. Likewise I have plot ideas for Man from UNCLE waiting for me to get round to.

On the other hand, as much as I love writing Magnificent 7, my plot ideas there seem to be limited to a) the story I wrote for Lumina's zine and b) the novella idea I'm working on for MediaWest. I wonder with that whether it's that I like the research I have to do for the period as much as I enjoy writing the meandering vocal discursions of Ezra?

I know why it is I read particular fandoms, I figured it out a while back (as the people at Red Rose can testify.. *g*) - there are certain characters (Daniel Jackson, Illya Kuryakin, Ezra Standish, Severus Snape, Peter Venkman, Artemus Gordon, Vic Mansfield, Alex Krycek, etc etc) who I have a particular 'thing' for. Again this 'thing' does not have to be slashy. But there's something about those characters that grabs my attention.

That's a common theme regarding who I like but it doesn't explain why I write about some more than others... Is there some kind of logic behind the plot bunnies that I'm just not seeing?
