Are they really mad? 'cause I don't see how one can be. JKR is finishing out a plot she formed years ago, and if some fans create a ship out of a few lines here and there from the different books, they can't complain if that's not what will happen. We don't know where JKR is going with the books, and if we bitch because we end up someplace we didn't think we'd be going, that's our own fault. Generic 'we', btw. :)
I think you're working from a disadvantage here because you're assuming that all fans are reasonable and logical. ;)
There are people out there flipping out because JKR made Blaise Zabini black, so having one part of your pairing of choice murder Dumbledore apparently in cold blood is more than enough to have people rending their clothes and proclaiming that their life is over OMGWTFBBQ!!!11!11!!!!
And then there's the whole vindication shit that some people are going to be pushing now - having been in a fandom where there's been much gloating and preening over the stupidest of 'proof' that one faction is right and everyone else is wrong, I wouldn't wish that on anyone (except maybe those doing the gloating and preening last time around).
If anything, I'd say it's been my experience that slashers tend to be quite a bit more mentally flexible when it comes to dealing with canon, so I doubt (as I've said on someone else's livejournal) that little things like death, murder and canon sexuality will have too much of an impact overall.
