It's also partly because it's a new post and therefore I am not joining an existing team (where people would be able to tell me who I need to see and where I need to go) or indeed taking over from someone else (ditto). Also, since it's July, a lot of the people I need to speak with at some point are away and many of the other people I need to speak with are busy covering for those people who are away.

And yes, looking busy takes an effort. ;)
